Purpose of your Site
Try to be very clear about why you want your site in the first place.  Let this guide the structure of your site and the content.  Write down some priorities to help you be very clear in what you need.  Feel free to include this when you send in your brief so our design team can keep it in mind.

Search Engine Optimisation
Carefully pick some key words which describe your service and then try to include these in your content.
Create a concise 5-8 word description of each page using words people are likely to “Google” in order to find your site.  This can be included as we build your site.  For an example next time you look at a website pay attention to the description at the very top, left hand side of the screen, usually next to your explorer symbol.
Put some effort into promoting your site and encouraging people to add reciprocal links to and from your site.
You can pay for a “sponsored link”.  These are the sites that are listed at the top and right hand side of a Google search results page.

Design Idea
Spend a bit of time looking at your competitor’s websites and try to identify what works about them and what doesn’t.  Try to include these ideas in your design brief.

Content
Keep your content concise and to the point.  Make sure your content has all the important information and sells your product or service. Get someone to read over your content and point out where you are repeating yourself or waffling.

Home Page
Make this your best page and make sure it sells your product in the most compelling way. Most people will not look past your home page so make sure it includes the most important information to sell your product and encourage people further into your site.  Research shows that every time someone has to go to a new page within your site, the number of people who continue to look through the site decreases.

Images
Good quality, professional looking photos and logos help to make your website more visually attractive and further sell your product. Keep this in mind while developing your brief.

Domain Name
Try to pick a name that is most suitable to your business, closest to your business name and not so complicated that there is room for error when someone types it into the address bar.

Make yourself an Expert
Positioning yourself as an industry “expert” through articles and fact sheets can be used to draw extra people to your site, build confidence amongst potential clients of how clever you are and also convince them that they need your help.

Calls to Action

Encourage people to do something towards starting a business relationship with you.  Get them to “Call you now!”, “email you here for a free quote”, “visit your shop this week and mention the site for a 5% discount” – anything to turn website visitors into captured customers.
